View from the conference in Luxembourg

Albania and the European Union held the Fourth Intergovernmental Conference today. Radoslaw Sikorski, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland, the country holding the presidency of the Council of the EU, said that enlargement remains at the forefront of EU policies.

"In the current overall geopolitical situation, enlargement remains at the forefront of the EU's policy agenda. The Polish Presidency supports an enlargement based on the EU's merits," he said.

Sikorski considered the conference successful and congratulated Rama for his work on the path towards the EU. He stated that the support of Albanians for EU integration will be a positive impetus for Poland to accelerate the negotiation process.

"Following a very successful intergovernmental conference with Albania during which the second negotiating chapter dedicated to the common market was opened. The chapters opened today are vital for Albania's economic integration into the EU internal market. They cover key economic areas. The necessary reforms will lead to economic compatibility with the EU, increase trade opportunities and make Albania more attractive to foreign investment.

"I congratulate Prime Minister Rama and your government for your efforts and clear dedication on the path towards the EU. I only have to repeat the fact that the overwhelming majority of the Albanian people support the path you are on. This is a positive impetus for us to accelerate the negotiation process," said Sikorski.

The Polish minister stated, among other things, that Albania "is a reliable partner in the field of security, as a NATO ally and a steadfast supporter of Ukraine."

"Today's conference marks a very important step towards Albania's integration into the EU. The EU is a good, secure and prosperous future. As we have experienced in Poland since 2004 and those who left the EU have regretted it. I assure you that such an effort is worth making ," he said.

At a roundtable with senior representatives of the European Union in Luxembourg, Prime Minister Edi Rama expressed his gratitude, in particular, to the Polish Presidency of the EU and Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos.

It made a chronological summary of previous intergovernmental conferences, to show Albania's positive journey towards the European family.

“Let me join you in expressing our condolences to our Ukrainian friends. I support every word you have so eloquently said about what has happened not far from here, on European soil, as an undeniable war crime. 6 months ago I was standing in this very hall, then we opened talks on the 6th group chapter and today we are here again for the opening of another group chapter. I cannot help but express words of gratitude to the Polish Presidency for its steadfastness in moving this process forward. In such a smooth manner that it seems truly surprising to us, considering where we come from and the struggles we have faced. Thanks go as always to the European Commission and Marta Kos, who once broke records by breaking water and became a champion of her country, now has become the chronometer of our countries and ensures that every move takes us forward with discipline ”, said Rama.

He announced that the aim is for the group chapters to be closed by 2027.

"Together with the Commission and under the disciplinary leadership of Kos, we have agreed on a very ambitious agenda. We look forward to ensuring together that by 2027 all group chapters are closed. We are here today to reconfirm our full determination and passion to achieve this objective. I am sure that my two friends next to me, but also all of you, understand that for Albania, EU membership is much more than a political or economic ambition, it is an existential issue. From a place we were never allowed to choose to a future we have always wanted to have. Our equality before the law and the way of life for our children and future generations cannot be guaranteed anywhere else but within the EU," Rama concluded.
