Socialist Party representatives at the Central Election Commission have requested an extension of the voter registration deadline only for immigrants whose applications have been rejected once.

SP representative Elena Xhina stated that the deadline of March 4 for closing the process was sufficient for immigrants to be notified and apply to the CEC.

She said that there are about 42,000 immigrants who have attempted to register but have been rejected, and have the right to reapply.

Statement:

In response to media interest regarding the idea of extending the registration deadline on the PER platform for Albanian citizens living abroad, the Socialist Party has supported the possibility of taking this measure only for those citizens who currently appear in the system as rejected applicants.

Considering the fact that these citizens have responded positively to the CEC's call for registration; have expressed their clear will within the stated deadline; are in considerable number (42,000); currently have an open account in the system and have been recognized the right to reapply despite being rejected; extending the deadline by a few days may create a last chance for them to correct the deficiencies and confirm their registration.

The Socialist Party emphasizes that this postponement measure has no reason to apply to other applicants outside this category, who do not currently have an open account in the PER system.

Thanks to the commitment of the CEC and political forces with the extensive information campaign, we estimate that there was sufficient time for every interested citizen to become part of the process by March 4th.

Any extension of the deadline for the category of applicants who have not yet expressed interest could again be considered insufficient and would defeat the very logic of deadlines in such a process. Meanwhile, granting additional time to those applicants who are rejected in the system would serve to exhaust all possibilities so that their willingness to be part of the process would not go to waste!
