Fredi Beleri, sentenced to two years in prison for vote-buying, is unlikely to be a candidate for the European Parliament with Greece's ruling New Democracy party in June's European Parliament elections.

According to the Greek newspaper Kathimerini, Beleri would be included as a New Democracy candidate in an attempt to divert votes from the growing far-right parties. However, the Greek Foreign Ministry warned that his candidacy could lead to complications.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will finally decide, with the announcement of the election candidates of the New Democracy, what is expected to happen in the coming days.
