The well-known Greek newspaper "Ta Nea" writes about the dark past of Fredi Beleri, the candidate of Kyriakos Mitsotakis for the MEP in the June 9 elections. It is about the event of March 19, 1995, where Fredi Beleri, together with 6 other people, were arrested near the border with Albania.

In the trunks of their two cars they carried 9 Kalashnikovs, two pistols, bayonets, radios, camouflage uniforms and hoods.

" Ta Nea " brings to attention the fact that this event took great proportions in the Greek press of the time, where it was written that a group of paramilitaries would attack the neighboring country.

This old story was probably forgotten by the majority of the Greek opinion, but in the media of the neighboring country it returned to the news after the complaint of the former Minister of Education, Nikos Fili, who publicly asked Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis a few days ago that to exclude the candidacy of Fredi Beleri from the list of his candidates for MEP proposed by New Democracy.

Further in the article it is emphasized that the arrest of 7 people, including Fredi Beleri, alerted the Greek authorities at the time, since a year ago unknown persons had entered Albania from Greece and killed two Albanian soldiers in the military department of Peshkepi in Gjirokastra.

For this, "Ta Nea" publishes in this Thursday's issue its first page published on Monday, March 20, 1995, which carried the title "7 provocateurs caught at the border".

The "Ta Nea" newspaper, referring to the testimonies of the time, states that "there was no doubt that the arrested were planning to attack a military target in Albania that was a short distance from the border."

Not only that, but in this case, the Greek daily referring to the same evidence points out that at that time it was discovered that it was roughly the same group, or at least some of its members were the same as those who had attacked the bishop's guild .

Based on this dark past, "Ta Nea" writes that Beler's candidacy will do more harm than good to Prime Minister Mitsotakis' list.

"Kyriakos Mitsotakis may consider the "blue" candidacy of Beleri as a "patriotic" and "right-wing" sign, which will resonate with the traditional base of the ruling party, however the other party believes that the presence of the mayor of Himara on the ballots of The DP, because of its "dark" past, will bring more losses than gains".

Fredi Beleri is in prison, sentenced by the Special Court of First Instance to 2 years for election corruption, after he tried to buy votes in the last local elections.

The big question for Edi Rama's Albanian government, the Greek media point out, is how it will deal with Fredi Beleri's case in the future if he is elected on June 9 as one of the 21 MEPs who will represent Greece in Brussels in the next five years, but is currently in custody.
