As the presidency has approved July 29 as the day when the elections for the party chairman will be held, the official PD has also published the criteria that the candidates will have to apply before entering the race.
The document provided by Balkanweb also includes two points that make it impossible for former Prime Minister Sali Berisha to run.
Thus, in the chapter " political engagement skills ", point 3 states that "the candidate for president must not have damaged the electoral interests of the Democratic Party in the last 3 years".
This means that the appearance of Sali Berisha with the Freedom Party in two election processes, in 2022 when partial elections were held in 6 municipalities and in the local elections of May 14, 2023, can be considered damage to the electoral interests of the DP.
But there is another point that makes it impossible to allow Berisha to run.
"There should be no disciplinary measures in force according to the provisions of the Statute of the Democratic Party", it is stated in point 2 of the chapter "moral integrity".
As of September 2021, Berisha has been officially expelled from the DP parliamentary group after announcing his non-compete.
