This afternoon, a meeting of socialist members of the Tirana Municipal Council was held at the headquarters of the Socialist Party, where the initiation of procedures for the dismissal of Mayor Erion Veliaj was discussed.

At this meeting, the document for Veliaj's dismissal was signed, which will be presented on Tuesday at the Tirana Municipal Council meeting, which will convene at 4:00 PM.

But during the meeting, there were members of the Socialist Party who were initially hesitant to sign the request for Veliaj's dismissal.

Councilor Aldo Mërkoçi resisted signing the request, although he eventually signed it along with all his colleagues. He requested that the statement note that Veliaj has served the city and other words about his good work, and his request was taken into account.

Even Eridian Saljanji considered it difficult to implement this political decision due to his long-standing collaboration with Veliaj. Even if he were in a position to choose between his position and Veliaj, the latter has stated that he would be willing to "sacrifice" himself.

However, in the end, all those councilors who were present signed the request for Veliaj's dismissal.

After the Municipal Council makes the request, the decision to dismiss Veliaj will be made by the Council of Ministers and then, Veliaj will have 15 days to appeal the dismissal decision to the Constitutional Court.

There are discussions on Article 62 of the Law "On Local Self-Government" regarding the procedures for dismissing the mayor, which leaves room for interpretation and ambiguity, since in point c, which is also the point on which the request for dismissal will be based, it is not clearly defined whether the mayor's absence from duty must be justified or not.

In Veliaj's case, it is not about free will since he is under arrest, although there is no final decision against him.
