The Tirana Municipal Council is expected to meet on Tuesday, September 23rd.

The Socialist members of the Municipal Council are expected to request the dismissal of Erion Veliaj on the grounds that he has been absent from duty for more than 3 months, referring to point c, article 62 of the law "on local self-government".

The decision was made at today's meeting of the municipality's socialist councilors, which was held at the headquarters of the Socialist Party.

This is the first official step by the Socialist Party to initiate procedures for the dismissal of Veliaj, who has been in detention since February 10 of this year.

After the Municipal Council initiates the procedures, it will be the Council of Ministers that will decide on the dismissal of the mayor. After that, Veliaj will have 15 days to appeal the dismissal decision to the Constitutional Court.

What does Article 62 of the Law "On Local Self-Government" say about the procedures for dismissing the mayor?

Dismissal of the mayor, Article 62

The mayor is dismissed by decision of the Council of Ministers in cases where:

a) Commits serious violations of the Constitution or laws;

b) Is convicted of committing a criminal offense by final court decisions;

c) Proposed for dismissal by the relevant municipal council for failure to appear for duty for an uninterrupted period of 3 months.

The Socialist councilors of the Municipality were put into action after Prime Minister Edi Rama declared at the SP Assembly that the capital could not wait another day for the work that needed to be done and announced that the procedures for the dismissal of Veliaj would be initiated. He also proposed that Ogerta Manastirliu be the SP candidate for mayor in the race.

Meanwhile, the preliminary hearing at the Criminal Court of Kosovo on Veliaj's case has been scheduled for September 29th.

In this session, Judge Etleva Deda will hear SPAK and its request for a trial, as well as the defendants in this process, in order to then come up with a decision on whether to proceed with the case for trial on the merits, dismiss it, or send it back for further investigation.

In addition to Tirana, five other municipalities will go to elections this fall: Vlora, following the resignation of Ermal Dredha; Cërriku, following the election of the mayor as Minister of Agriculture; as well as Berat, Mati and Tepelena.
