A new constitutional reform is in the plans of the socialist majority before the end of this parliamentary mandate.

Prime Minister Edi Rama has publicly reopened the debate on amending the Constitution, proposing to reduce the number of deputies in the Albanian Parliament from 140 to 100.

After the meeting of the SP parliamentary group, Rama declared that it is necessary to establish an initiative group that will deal with the drafting and discussion of constitutional amendments.

According to him, a smaller Assembly would be more functional, while the process requires time, expertise and serious institutional commitment, as it goes beyond a simple electoral reform.

"We have raised the need for the Albanian Parliament to be reduced in size, we have an assembly with 140 members, we could very well have an assembly with 100 members. There are also important aspects that need to be chosen by people who know what they see, read, say, when it comes to the Albanian constitution, a group must be established that then opens a process, it is much more than an electoral reform, it requires much more space, commitment, resources," said Rama.

The Prime Minister emphasized that the majority's ambition is to approve the constitutional reform by the end of the mandate, in parallel with the fulfillment of the objectives of European integration.

Rama also focused on the path towards the European Union, calling 2027 the deadline for closing negotiations. He recalled that the 83 mandates won in the May 11 elections constitute a political obligation to fulfill promises, from institutional reforms to meeting European standards, including the environment and food safety.
