Kathimerini: "Berlin, Edi Rama and behind the scenes"

Germany's opposition to the blockade that Greece has imposed on Albania for the opening of chapters with the EU, is not easily understood in Athens.

The Greek media "Kathimerini" has made an article titled "Berlin, Edi Rama and behind the scenes", analyzing the fact why German Chancellor Olaf Scholz supports Albania's membership and is against the veto that Greece has set.

"Chancellor Olaf Scholz's support for Albania's accession process, while he was aware of the Greek veto related to the oath of the elected mayor of Himara, was not a thunderbolt in Athens. In recent weeks, messages have arrived from Berlin and Washington that Athens must show that it is negotiating with Rama. The answer from Athens was the same, for Fredi Beleri to swear, have a fair trial and respect his presumption of innocence", "Kathimerini" writes.

According to the analysis, there are 2 reasons why the German Chancellor openly expressed his opposition to Greece.

"The first has to do with Albania's own investment in reforming justice and the rule of law in the country. The SPAK, which did not allow Fredi Beleri to take the oath, is a body formed with an Anglo-Saxon spirit and German funding and support. Prosecutors are trained at the FBI academy in Quantico in Virginia, USA, but also in the United Kingdom in London. For both the Americans and the Germans, SPAK is the most successful example of justice reform in the Western Balkans", continues Kathimerini, who goes on to write that "they don't even understand that (SPAK) can become a tool for political exploitation and which mainly highlights the naivety of the West regarding the situation in Albania".

As for the second reason for the German opposition, according to Kathimerini, it is mostly political and less technical.

"Germany had expressed its displeasure since August when Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis organized the Western Balkans summit in Athens, with the participation of the Ukrainian President, but did not invite Prime Minister Edi Rama. A few weeks later, the Berlin Process summit was held in Tirana. A major reason, which also shows the often hasty German effort, is the situation in the Western Balkans after the February 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. Germany, which until then had hesitated, strongly returned to the side of those countries that want quick and immediate integration (and without many conditions) in the EU of Albania and North Macedonia", "Kathimerini" writes, among other things.

The Greek daily closes the article by saying that in the Albanian camp, the government keeps a low tone. "A day ago at a press conference, Prime Minister Rama described Mitsotakis as a friend and emphasized that according to him, the Beleri issue can be resolved between the two states and not through the EU," Kathimerini emphasizes.
