The US chargé d'affaires meets with Nikola, Wisner: Functional
David Wisner and Lindita Nikolla

The Speaker of the Assembly, Lindita Nikolla, met today with the Chargé d'Affaires of the US Embassy, David Wisner.

During the meeting, the contribution of the Assembly to the strengthening of the strategic partnership between Albania and the United States and the deepening of reforms was discussed.

Nikolla underlined that the Assembly is working for the advancement of justice reform, the fight against corruption and the consolidation of democratic institutions. The Speaker of the Parliament informed Wisner about the efforts to restore the activity of the Assembly to normality, for the development of the parliamentary debate during the plenary sessions, so that the public and citizens are better acquainted with the content of the legislation that is reviewed and approved in the Assembly.

The US Embassy reacted to Wisner's meeting with Nikola by noting that the main discussions were about the return to normality of the Assembly, where for months the Reestablishment has been causing chaos by not allowing discussions and debates on very important draft laws.

"Charge-in-Charge David Wisner met today with Speaker of Parliament Lindita Nikolla to emphasize the United States' commitment to strengthening Albania's democratic institutions, as well as its law enforcement and anti-corruption efforts, as the country moves forward towards Euro-Atlantic integration. A fully functional parliament, where elected representatives work constructively for the people, is essential for the fulfillment of these goals" - the US embassy responded.
Also earlier, EU Ambassador Silvio Gonzato called for political parties to reach an agreement for the return of normality in the Assembly so that the country can progress with the continuation of the necessary reforms.

For almost 5 months, there has been no normality in the Assembly, as the Reestablishment group continues with the deadlock scenario. The Speaker of the Parliament, Lindita Nikolla, has held meetings with the heads of the parliamentary groups, among them Bardhi of Re-establishment, with the aim of returning normalcy to the Assembly. The Electoral Reform Commission is also under discussion.
