Fredi Beleri

The Greek newspaper Kathimerini writes today that the decision taken for the elected mayor of Himara, Fredi Beleri, opens the front of a long-standing conflict in the Balkans, which could be added to North Macedonia, if nationalists win.

In a brief note, the paper underlines that Athens has been put under great pressure by the US and the EU to change its stance on Tirana on the issue and that this pressure could be doubled if "the Greek government follows the advice of some politicians to impose bilateral sanctions."

Author Vassilis Nedos writes that western positions on this issue have to do with the fact that Edi Rama's Albania is emerging as the most anti-Russian country among the Balkan countries, which is being interpreted as right to ignore Greek pressure.
