The head of the Democratic Party parliamentary group, Gazment Bardhi, has reacted sharply to the decision of President Bajram Begaj, who, through a letter addressed to the Constitutional Court, requested that dates be set for all mandates regarding the process of renewing members.
Bardhi has described it as an unacceptable and condemnable act. According to Bardhi, Begaj is acting in the interest of Prime Minister Edi Rama to take full control of the Constitutional Court.
He accused President Begaj of implementing a political scenario directed by the majority and said that this action risks delegitimizing the entire institution of the Constitutional Court. “Begaj has not surprised anyone as a loyal soldier of Rama, but his courage to destroy the Constitution is beyond all expectations,” he added.
Full reaction:
The unprecedented act of Bajram Begaj, in the name and on behalf of Edi Rama, to capture 100% of the Constitutional Court, is not only condemnable, but also unacceptable.
The Constitution has clearly given the judges in office a full 9-year mandate, which cannot be violated under any circumstances after taking office. Violation of mandates means violating the independence of the Court itself and the fundamental principles of the rule of law.
With today's act, Bajram Begaj has not surprised anyone for his role as a loyal soldier of Edi Rama, but his courage to go so far as to blow up the Constitution just so that Edi Rama can seize the Constitutional Court 100% is beyond the expectations of even the lowest-ranking soldier.
Strongly condemning today's act by Bajram Begaj, I appeal that this game, which endangers the legitimacy of the Constitutional Court itself, be stopped immediately.
