VLEN, the coalition of Albanian parties in government in North Macedonia, has condemned the action of Albanian Foreign Minister Ferit Hoxha, following messages claiming that the minister addressed the Albanians of North Macedonia "what are those Albanian idiots saying there?" in a group communication.
According to VALEN, the message constitutes a serious diplomatic scandal, and a public apology should be sought.
"After that, Hoxha deleted the post, as if with one click the public insult could be deleted. But deleting the post is not enough. For such an act, a public apology is needed," the statement says, among other things.
But this statement has been met with a response from DUI, which is the Albanian party in opposition to RMV, which states that WLEN is a spokesperson against Albanian interests.
VALENTINE: "Deleting the post is not enough, Minister Ferit Hoxha must publicly apologize. The contemptuous message of the Albanian minister, Ferit Hoxha, towards the Albanians of North Macedonia, calling them "idiots", constitutes a serious political and diplomatic scandal. Such language is unacceptable, offensive and far from any ethics. It proves a lack of diplomatic culture and opens serious dilemmas as to how a representative of the Albanian state can speak with contempt about Albanians across the border. VALENTINE cannot treat this case as an ordinary communication incident. The numerous reactions from Albania, North Macedonia, political representatives, journalists, publicists and citizens proved that this language was read as it was offensive, contemptuous and unacceptable. After that, Hoxha deleted the post, as if with one click the public offense could be deleted. But deleting the post is not enough. For such an act a public apology is needed. Even more worrying is the silence of official Tirana. No distancing and no word about this derogatory language towards the Albanians of North Macedonia. The message is made even more serious by the fact that the Albanian ambassador in Skopje, Denion Meidani, also appears in that communication. Instead of condemning such language, the impression has rightly been created that official Tirana, through its ambassador, is being placed in the function of the Albanian opposition in North Macedonia. This is unacceptable.
Anyone who tries to present this as an insult only to VLEN is seriously mistaken. Tens of thousands of Albanians voted for VLEN. Behind VLEN are families, intellectuals, workers, old and young, honest people who have chosen their political path by voting. Therefore, this is not just an attack on a political entity, but contempt for a large part of the Albanian electorate in North Macedonia. The Albanians of North Macedonia are not the periphery of the nation. They are an inseparable part of the Albanian core. Any derogatory language towards them does not only affect a political entity, but insults a living part of the Albanian nation. Ferit Hoxha should at least publicly apologize.”
DUI: "Today, Vlen once again confirmed the role assigned to him by VMRO-DPMNE: spokesperson against Albania and against Albanian interests. For weeks, Hristijan Mickoski has launched political attacks on Albania, because Albania is not silent in the face of the violation of the equality of Albanians in North Macedonia and because it is moving forward in the European process. Instead of defending the dignity of Albanians here, Vlen immediately aligned himself with VMRO-DPMNE. Today we saw something unprecedented: their Albanian elected officials in the government attacking Albania with harsher language than their Macedonian partners. Instead of demanding respect for the Albanian language, fair representation and the European course of the country, they are wasting energy fighting VMRO-DPMNE's battles. Albanians in North Macedonia do not need representatives who are used as tools against Tirana whenever government propaganda demands it. They need representatives who defend their national and civic interests. History will remember this period as the time when some were called on behalf of Albanians, but in fact they became instruments against Albanians"
