Durrës under water/ DP: Millions of euros in the pockets of those connected
Genta Vangjeli

In a statement to the media, the spokesperson for Anti-Corruption in the Democratic Party, Genta Vangjeli, denounced the responsibility of the government and local institutions for the catastrophic floods in Durrës, describing them as the result of systematic misuse of public funds.

She emphasized that, while citizens suffer the damage caused by the floods, millions of euros from the European Union and the state budget have been used for narrow interests, through companies connected to local officials and the central government.

Vangjeli demanded the immediate resignation of the mayor of Durres, Emirjana Sako, as well as the director of the UKD, Ermal Dredha, accusing them of poor management and misuse of funds.

According to her, the company Adriatik sh.pk, owned by the family of former UKD head Spartak Kovaçi, has been involved in the implementation of several infrastructure projects that have not brought real improvements, but have only deepened the failures.

Vangjeli warned that floods and infrastructure failures will continue as long as Albania is led by Edi Rama, and called for the launch of a full and impartial investigation into the misuse of funds and conflicts of interest.

Statement by the Anti-Corruption Spokesperson in the Democratic Party, Genta Vangjeli:

The intense rainfall forecasted this week has brought another severe flood to the city of Durrës, causing extraordinary damage to citizens.

This situation once again proves the systematic failure of institutions to guarantee security and functional infrastructure, despite promises and funds allocated over the years.

In this context, Ermal Dredha's resignation is a necessary, but not sufficient, step.

This responsibility must also be shared by Emirjana Sako, who has held the office of mayor while the city has suffered the consequences of poor management of public resources and funds.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Edi Rama continues to live in a parallel reality, where the vision for a tourist port in Durrës is hidden behind the severe flooding scenes, which are the reality of the citizens.

We remind the public that funds for infrastructure improvement existed, but they ended up in the pockets of officials connected to power.

From an investigation conducted by us, it results that at the center of the implementation of some of the infrastructure projects was the company Adriatik sh.pk, owned by the family of the former head of UKD, Mr. Spartak Kovaçi.

Some of the relevant projects include:

10 million euros grant from the European Commission for the construction of the wastewater network from the Agai stream (Kavajës Rock) - Dajlanit Bridge - to the plant in Shënavlash, carried out by the Italian company Giovanni Putignano & Srl and the Albanian company Adriatik sh.pk
19.7 million euros for the rehabilitation of the network in the Porto Romano–Keneta area and the system of rainwater in the urban areas of the city of Durrës, with contract no. 70/3, dated 19.01.2022, where the implementer was again Adriatik sh.pk
another 400 thousand euros for the system of white water on 'Taulantia' street, with a contract dated 24 November 2022, with the implementer Adriatik sh.pk
Dear citizens, as long as Albania is represented by Edi Rama, floods and infrastructure failures will not be the exception - but the rule.

We invite the relevant institutions to launch a full and impartial investigation into the misuse of public funds and conflicts of interest that have severely harmed the citizens of Durrës and beyond.
