Chollet and Escobar report to the US Senate: the Balkans, Biden's priority
USA, session on the Western Balkans in the Senate

The future of the Western Balkans is a priority for the administration of US President Joe Biden. This is what the Counselor of the US Department of State, Derek Chollet, declared at the hearing of the Committee on Foreign Relations of the Senate, which held on the American engagement in the Balkans.

As for Albania, Chollet said that the US supports Albania's integration into the European Union.

"We strongly support the integration into the European Union for Albania and North Macedonia. They are exceptional NATO allies. Last July, they opened negotiations for admission, which we strongly support."

At the hearing, DASH's special envoy for the Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, also evaluated regional initiatives such as Open Balkans, noting the risk of Russian or Chinese influences in the region.

"We support countries to work more closely together in line with European standards, and as long as it is open to all as equal members. We support the Open Balkans, we support the common market and the Berlin Process."

As for Kosovo, Chollet said that the Ohrid agreement defines a path towards the normalization of relations. While Escobar said that the failure to make progress towards a Kosovo-Serbia agreement has given Russia the opportunity to play a damaging role in the Western Balkans.

The chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Bob Menendez, emphasized that the essence of stability in the Balkans is the final solution to the conflict between Kosovo and Serbia.

He criticized the American officials, saying that he has the impression that Kosovo is being pressured to create the Association, while little pressure is being put on Belgrade, little pressure is being put on a leader who, as the Senator said, the New York newspaper Times, characterized him as a politician with deep ties to the world of organized crime.

Responding to Senator Menedez's concern that the Association would turn into a kind of "Serbian Republic" in Kosovo, Washington's Western Balkans envoy Gabriel Escobar said the Association would be created within the Kosovo Constitution and based on European models that already exist. .
