Through a post on social networks, the DP leader calls it one of the most important events for Albanians that crowns the centuries-old sacrifice of half the nation for freedom and independence.

Happy Independence of Kosovo!

February 17, 2008 is undoubtedly one of the most important events for Albanians crowning the centuries-old sacrifice of half the nation for freedom and independence.

On this precious day we remember with national honor and deep gratitude the legendary commander of the KLA Adem Jashar, the architect of Independence President Ibrahim Rugova and thousands of sons and daughters of Kosovo who sacrificed their lives for the altar of Kosovo's freedom.

We are proud of the progress that Kosovo has achieved in the last 16 years. Today there are still challenges ahead, but I am convinced that with the determination, commitment and maturity of Kosovo's political leadership in cooperation and with the support of strategic partners, the US, the EU, the UK, will succeed in building a strong, developed and integrated state in international and Euro-Atlantic institutions.

This is a very special day for me personally and that part of my family who like thousands of others were expelled from their lands. I am happy for every day I have dedicated to the cause of Kosovo and thank God for giving me the opportunity to do so as a trust passed down through generations, as long as I have strength and opportunity I will be at Kosovo's side to help in its success.
