Interior Minister Albana Koçiu commented from parliament on the accusations that the police used violence against protesters during the opposition's national protest on January 24.

She stressed that the police acted in accordance with the law.  

“The state police performed their duty to the best of their ability. The police did not use violence against the protesters, what happened was that the police were confronted with violence. During the rally, police officers were attacked with Molotov cocktails, pyrotechnics and hard objects in front of important institutions and 11 were injured and treated in hospital. The police acted in full compliance with the rules, the law and called for a halt to violence and the preservation of the peaceful nature of the protest, and after these calls were ignored and the danger became evident, then the institutions and citizens felt threatened in this situation, measures were taken to disperse the crowd according to legal provisions. The accusations that the police used excessive force or means beyond necessity are untrue and unfounded. Every action was carried out as required by the law. I would like to emphasize that the right to protest is constitutional but violence is not a political right. Throwing Molotov cocktails, attacking the police is not a protest but a violation of the law and democratic order. "The perpetrators of violence cannot be protected," the minister said.

Focusing on the escort of the 14-year-old to the police, the minister emphasized that he was taken to the police station for verification after throwing stones at officers, but it turned out that he was 14 years old. According to her, he was kept in a special environment until the arrival of his legal representative, while pointing the finger at the opposition for using him as a political "shield".
