The most important archaeological discoveries of 2022

The year 2022 was a year of great archaeological discoveries. Some, such as the discovery in Egypt of the pyramid of a hitherto unknown queen, rewrote a part of history; others, such as the identification of the wreck of the Endurance among the Antarctic ice caps, ended a century-long search. The Italian magazine "Focus" has selected the most important findings of the year.

EGYPT, THE TEMPLE OF ZEUS. Last April at the archaeological site of Tel al-Farma, where ancient Pelusium once stood, the remains of an ancient temple dedicated to Zeus were found. Excavations began from two Asean granite columns, located at the entrance, which collapsed after an ancient earthquake.

Why is it important? The search for this temple had started more than a hundred years ago. We now have evidence that in ancient times different religious beliefs merged and that the cult of the Greek god Zeus was combined with that of other regional deities.

ITALY, BRONZE STATUE. Twenty-four bronze statues in perfect condition were unearthed in November in the sacred baths of the Etruscan-Roman sanctuary of San Casciano dei Bagni, in the province of Siena. They date back more than 2000 years and depict characters as diverse as emperors, women, wives, daughters and Apollo.

Why is it important? Not since the discovery of the Riace Bronzes had such an extraordinary discovery been made. Finding bronzes in an excellent state of preservation is very difficult, and so far only terracotta statues have been found from this transitional period known as Romanization.

GUATEMALA, MAYAN CALENDAR . The oldest sacred Mayan calendar was discovered in April in San Bartolo, Guatemala and dates back to between 300 and 200 BC. Unlike the Mayan solar calendar, this had a year of 260 days, based on the combination of two 13- and 20-day cycles.

Why is it important? It is the oldest Mayan calendar discovered so far.

EGYPT, THE PYRAMID OF NEITH. November brought with it a sensational discovery in the wonderland of Saqqara, Egypt, the pyramid of Neith, a hitherto unknown ancient queen, an underground treasure chest filled with sarcophagi, mummies and artifacts.

Why is it important? Because in addition to finding hundreds of sarcophagi from the New Kingdom, we also discovered the pyramid of a hitherto unknown queen, once again rewriting the history of Ancient Egypt.

INDONESIA, THE FIRST AMPUTATION. The " first surgical operation" in history dates back to 31,000 years ago, when a child from Indonesian Borneo had part of his leg amputated. The operation was successful and the patient not only survived but died six to nine years later.

Why is it important? Before that, the oldest recorded amputation we had evidence for was 7,000 years ago.

ITALI, VENUSI I WILLENDORF.

ANTARKTIDA, ZBULIMI I ENDURANCE.

Why is it important? The Endurance is a monument to the era of polar exploration and was found in excellent condition, thanks to the very low temperatures of the Antarctic bed.
