WhatsApp brings "incognito chat" with AI, conversations that leave no

WhatsApp has introduced private conversations with its artificial intelligence chatbot, which even the tech company won't be able to read in a new "incognito" mode.

This means that neither the user's nor the artificial intelligence's responses will be monitored if the feature is activated, and past conversations will disappear from the user's chat.

Will Cathcart, head of WhatsApp, said people wanted to have private conversations with artificial intelligence on sensitive topics, including health, relationships and finances, and didn't want them to be accessible.

But a cybersecurity expert has told the BBC that this could lead to a lack of accountability for WhatsApp if things go wrong, as they will not have access to chat history.

WhatsApp is owned by Meta, which also owns Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger.

When Meta AI was added to WhatsApp last year, it was criticized by some angry users for not being able to disable it.

But in May 2025, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that Meta AI had reached one billion users across all of its apps.

"We've heard from many people that they feel some concern about sharing [personal] information with the company, yet they want answers," Cathcart said of the latest announcement.
