Matchmaking is a part of Albanian society, which even after so many years, continues to be present.
In "Albania LIVE", Meleqe Reja, the first Roma teacher, confessed her life's challenges starting from childhood. She told how at the age of 8 she was engaged and at the age of 11 they tried to marry her, while her desire was education.
" My parents had 8 children. When I got engaged I was 8 years old. The boy was 2 or 3 years older than me. I didn't know what engagement was. I was going to get married in the fourth grade. I hated it when my husband's family members came to my house. I had a fear that I would leave home, that I would be separated from my sisters and brothers.
It was not only torture, but it was a scandal what was done to the children. My father had many children and he would select who he would feed, but he forgot that I would really leave but I would come back 3 times later because I would understand that that man was not for me.
Although I opposed it, I got married but then we broke up because we realized that we were not meant for each other. I did not understand at that time what father-in-law, husband, marriage was. The parent did not understand that this was violence he was inflicting on me", said Reja.
