Living near bars and restaurants increases the risk of heart problems

Living near bars, pubs and fast-food restaurants can increase the risk of heart failure, a new study has revealed.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death globally, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), and new research published in the journal Circulation: Heart Failure suggests that where you live can make a difference.

Researchers analyzed data from half a million adults aged 37 to 73 from the UK Biobank. The researchers assessed people's exposure to bars, pubs and fast food restaurants by proximity (living within one kilometer) and density (total number of ready-to-eat food outlets within one kilometer).

People who lived less than 500 meters from bars and pubs had a 13% higher risk of heart failure compared to people who lived more than two kilometers away. For fast food restaurants, the risk was 10%.

Overall, participants who lived in areas with the highest density of convenience food outlets, mainly bars, pubs and fast food places, had a 16% greater risk of heart failure compared to those without these restaurants nearby .

Heart failure occurs when the heart muscle does not pump blood effectively, leading to a pooling of blood and possible accumulation of fluid in the lungs, resulting in shortness of breath, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Nearby fast food places and bars are not the only risk factors. Heart failure risk was strongest among participants without a college degree and adults in urban areas without access to fitness centers.

The study appears to confirm previous research conducted in the Netherlands and Sweden. The researchers also insisted on the importance of conducting larger studies as their demographic is over 94% white Europeans.
