According to a new study, a daily action that most of us do every morning can significantly increase the risk of cancer. And this is a detail you should remember the next time you look at yourself in the bathroom mirror.

If you don't spend enough time brushing your teeth, you could be putting your health at risk in more serious ways than you think.

The study conducted by American scientists found that not taking care of a particular part of oral hygiene can increase the risk of developing two specific types of cancer: squamous cancer of the head and neck.

These types of cancer are linked to bacteria in the mouth that can also cause gum disease. Professor Richard Hayes from New York University explained that good oral hygiene is essential to minimize the risk of cancer. He pointed out that brushing and flossing help prevent gum disease and can also protect against head and neck cancer.

In the UK, around 13,000 new cases of head and neck cancer are diagnosed each year, while only 30% of people floss, indicating a significant problem in oral hygiene. Symptoms of this type of cancer are mild and usually become apparent at later stages, making it more difficult to treat.

The study, published in JAMA Oncology, involved more than 160,000 people in the US who provided saliva samples and were tested for oral microbes. After 15 years of follow-up, 236 participants were diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck, and 13 different types of bacteria were found to be associated with this cancer, increasing the risk by 50%.

In conclusion, the researchers plan to further investigate the ways in which these bacteria cause the disease and how to intervene to prevent their development.
