Josephine and Alfred Waterfield, who are both 100 years old and recently celebrated their 75th birthdays, have kept their relationship in good shape for more than a century thanks to small daily squabbles, their family says.

"They say the secret to a happy marriage for nearly a century is to have a fight every day," the couple's son Allen, 74, told Britain's Express newspaper.

Alfred, who turns 101 next month, agrees with his son that petty squabbles are what helped him stay married to Josephine - but he didn't reveal exactly what they fought about.

"It's rare these days to see marriages last this long, so they achieved something beautiful," Allen added.

100-year-old Alfred also stated that the secret to both of their longevity is a daily drink.

"They both drink a glass of alcohol every night before they go to bed," said Allen, who revealed that his father enjoys many types of alcohol.

“He also likes whiskey. He drinks a glass of whiskey and a beer every day at lunch and it does him good," says Allen.

Alfred and Josephine who are both British and live in the East Midlands, met in a pub in 1938 who also served in the Second World War.

Alfred was a marine, while Josephine joined the Women's Land Army, a rural labor force created to increase Britain's food production during the war.

The pair married in 1947 and had four children.

In April, they celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary, and Josephine turned 100 on October 4.

They live in the old people's home where their family members go to visit them very often.

Staff at the nursing home where Alfred and Josephine live say the couple are still madly in love with each other, despite their daily squabbles.
