Twitter has launched a subscription service that allows users to purchase verification for a monthly fee of $7.99.

The original verification system was designed to help users identify influential users on the platform, including government figures, entertainers, journalists, brands and organizations.

But in an update for Apple iOS devices, the company revealed that any user who "signs up now" to its premium "Twitter Blue" service will receive a blue tick. The update said the service will offer: “Power to the people. Your account will get a blue tick, just like the celebrities you already follow. Other features promised to be "coming soon" include half the number of ads, the ability to post longer videos, and priority ranking.

Musk is planning to diversify Twitter's revenue streams. He is looking to drastically cut costs at the company. The firm began sweeping staff cuts worldwide, with suggestions that half of its more than 7,500 staff could be cut.

The platform's co-founder Jack Dorsey apologized to staff, saying he "owns responsibility" for the mass layoffs. "I am responsible for why everyone is in this situation. I grew the size of the company very quickly. I apologize for that. “I'm grateful and I love everyone who worked on Twitter. I don't expect you to feel the same way right now. I understand you".
