Why did everyone get sick this year?

Respiratory viruses and flu-like syndromes are on the rise, with respiratory viruses especially prevalent this year. Why did everyone get sick this year? Are people weaker or have viruses become more aggressive? These and other questions are answered by Fabrizio Pregliasco, virologist at the State University of Milan.

Do temperatures affect the appearance of symptoms of flu or other viruses?

The cold has its own action, albeit indirect, in lowering the immune defense, slowing down blood circulation, and consequently these also affect morbidity. Then there is the fact that we find ourselves indoors with poor ventilation.

Is this perhaps the first year in which we have truly returned to our pre-Covid habits?

We are now in a year where there is a new normal, a total recovery and also, unfortunately, a forgetting of those measures that limited the spread of respiratory infections. The fact that no one is vaccinated anymore is a sign of inattention. There is a tendency to remove that experience. On the one hand it is fair and understandable, but the precautions have been lost and that is not a good thing.

Is there a real increase in infections this year?

There is a severe flu season, somewhat similar to last year, but there are many infections of other viruses (such as Covid) which have "reduced" a bit as in most cases they do not cause major problems .

Can we do a ranking and put the virus that is causing the most problems at the top?

Of course there is respiratory syncytial virus which is the protagonist compared to others and then there was mycoplasma pneumonia in children. There are 263 types and subtypes of respiratory viruses, plus we have a noticeable portion of Covid which has become somewhat milder but very present in terms of quantity."

Can infection with Covid or other infections weaken us further?

Yes, previous respiratory infections somewhat worsen the response to other viruses. Even bacteria spread well 'thanks' to a previous infection that has lowered the immune defense.

How to prevent infections?

On a physiological level, a healthy and balanced diet is important. Giving up smoking and perhaps taking vitamin B12 or vitamin C (with doctor's recommendation), which have their own anti-inflammatory and immune system stimulating action, and then attention should also be paid to temperature changes in different environments.

Should masks still be used?

Of course. They are important because they protect the upper respiratory tract. It is right to enjoy the new normal, but to be calm we must protect the weak and the elderly.
