Why are the Nordics the happiest

The Nordics are always winning the race of happiness. Finland took first place for the fifth year in a row, followed by Denmark, Switzerland and Iceland.

But why are they so happy?

A few years ago, a research study suggested that Nordics are genetically 'forced' to be happier. But according to the World Happiness Report, these theories are not correct, writes Euronews.

Does money affect their happiness?

Yes, the Nordic countries are all relatively rich and happy, but not all relatively rich countries are as happy as the Nordics. Singapore, one of the richest in the world, is in 27th place, while Kuwait, the fifth richest in the world, is again in 54th place.

The only money factor to consider is that the Nordic countries are known for low levels of income inequality.

Are they biologically predisposed to be happy?

Science has told us for years that genetics play a role in explaining people's satisfaction with their lives. But studies show that 60 to 70 percent of the difference in happiness between people is caused by environmental factors, so only the remaining 30 to 40 percent is attributed to genetics.

Factors that affect people's happiness:

The quality of government institutions and the generosity of the welfare state

These have a significant and positive impact on life satisfaction. The data show that people are more satisfied with their lives in places where there is institutional quality. This is usually divided into democratic quality and quality of delivery. This means: good pensions, parental leave, maintenance for the sick and disabled, free health and education, solid unemployment benefits.

Trust is extremely important

One of the experiments they have conducted to test and prove the importance of trust is asking people if they thought their wallet would return to them if they lost it.

People who believed that their wallets would be returned considered themselves happier.

Progressive taxation

Researchers have come up with a strong link between progressive taxation - a tax rate that increases as the taxable amount increases and people appreciate how happy they are.

Progressive taxation leads to happiness through public and common goods such as health care, education, and public transportation that the tax helps finance.

Laughing and singing does not necessarily mean being happy

If you look at the prevalence of positive emotions in different countries throughout the World Happiness reports, Latin America usually ranks first, however these countries do not even reach the top 20 places in the overall ranking for happiness.

On the other hand, the Nordic countries come out as the happiest, but it is not the place where people show positive emotions.
