Why are there small buttons in the pockets of jeans?

What are those little metal studs at the edges of our jeans pockets that apparently serve no purpose?

This is the question that has plagued fashion lovers for years. But, it turns out, the real answer is much more complicated than expected.

As revealed by denim giant Levi Strauss & Co, seemingly decorative attachments actually helped give birth to the original blue jean.

In a post on its website, the brand explained that the buttons – known as 'rivets' – were a revolutionary addition that helped hold the trousers together.

On May 20, 1873, Levi Strauss, a Bavarian dry goods merchant who moved to San Francisco, and tailor Jacob Davis, received a patent for the design.

The idea first came to Jakob when a worker's wife asked him to make a pair of pants that wouldn't tear.

Rivets, he reasoned, would help hold garments together at stress points, such as pocket corners and button bases.

Despite spikes having been around for over a century, it seems their existence still baffles people.

A viral Reddit post from nine years ago that questioned the purpose of metal studs continues to make the rounds online.

Capturing a photo of the fixtures, the user wrote:

“These are in all jeans. Do they serve a purpose, practical or otherwise? If not… why are they there?”

One user said:

"Look at the location of the studs on the garment. It is positioned close to where the pocket begins so that it can serve as a structural reinforcing component to prevent the pocket from tearing through the garment.”
