A bluefin tuna was sold for 36.04 million yen (about 257,000 euros) in the traditional auction of the year at the Toyosu fish market in Tokyo (Japan).
The fish weighed 212 kilograms and its price was more than double the record paid last year for a bluefin tuna, which was 16.88 million yen. In addition, it was the sixth-highest amount ever paid on the Tokyo wholesale market since 1999.

Tokyo-based wholesaler Yamayuki and Ginza chain Onodera, with branches in China and the United States, were the joint highest bidders for the tuna, which was caught in waters near the port of Omas, in Aomori.
In Japan it is common for some types of fish to be sold at these high figures. Japan is one of the largest consumers of fish in the world.
