We've all had at least one experience of not being able to sleep at night, being scared, or thinking that someone is watching us, it may not be a thief, but something else supernatural.

Although not everyone who believes in or fears ghosts admits it, recent polls show that around a third of Britons believe in the supernatural. Putting aside the guesswork and speculation, experts have uncovered the real reason why some people believe in spirits and others don't.

According to them, belief in ghosts and supernatural things has nothing to do with a lack of intelligence or mental health. Experts mostly link belief in the paranormal to stress. But at the same time, they make a distinction between belief in unusual or supernatural things and belief in astrology or fortune telling.

Researchers at Manchester Metropolitan University are raising the alarm, as persistent paranormal belief predicts greater distress and lower coping skills, indicating that such beliefs can reduce individuals' sense of control.

Even though there is no evidence for life after death, a surprising number of people still believe in ghosts and spirits. Belief in the supernatural, they say, does not endanger people's psychology, except in cases of schizophrenia.

On the contrary, they believe that belief in ghosts or other abnormal and unreal things can provide a form of coping that helps people cope with high-stress situations.

Surveys have shown that most people believe in ghosts, vampires, demons, or something similar because they want to believe in them. It's easier to believe that your life is not going the way it should because of a demon, or something supernatural, than to try to find fault with yourself.
