Scientists, for the first time, have recorded the brain waves of a dying person.
"For the first time we have captured a snapshot of what human brain waves look like in a dying person."
An 87-year-old man who was in the emergency room deteriorated while attached to an electroencephalograph (EEG) machine that captured his brain waves while he was having a heart attack.
This is not the first time we have seen brain activity in a dying person.
Simplified EEG recordings have been made in some patients who have had their life insurance withdrawn, although these are limited. This is the first instance of detailed recordings that may be able to shed some light on what we experience when we die.
