Life on Earth may have come from a planet trillions of miles away, scientists suggest, which means we could be aliens.

The chemical "building blocks" of our DNA have been discovered for the first time on asteroids that hit our planet billions of years ago.

This means that the seed of our life may have been sown here by someone else in the universe.

Samples from three carbon-rich meteorites, named Murchison, Murray and Tagish Lake, were analyzed using best techniques.

Professor Yasuhiro Oba, of Hokkaido University, Japan, said: “We found a diverse range of organic materials, including nucleobases (our basic building blocks of life.)

"We believe that the influx of these organic substances played an important role in the evolution of life on Earth. "This is a very exciting discovery that expands our understanding of how life began."

Two types of chemical building blocks, or nucleobases, are needed to form DNA and RNA - the basis of life on Earth, writes The Sun.

These are called pyrimidines and purines.
