NASA reveals surprising fact: Chinese dam shifted Earth's rotation and
Three Gorges Dam

NASA has discovered a surprising fact that may sound like something out of a science fiction movie: The Three Gorges Dam in China has shifted the Earth's axis of rotation by nearly 2 centimeters and has lengthened the length of our days by a few microseconds.

This is one of those cases where the impact of human activity goes beyond the local environment and enters the realm of forces that shape the planet itself.

The discovery was made by scientists at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, who analyzed the impact this mega-dam has had on Earth's mass and gravitational distribution. Built over a period of 18 years, from 1994 to 2012, the Three Gorges Dam transformed the Yangtze River into a colossal reservoir with a capacity of 39.3 billion cubic meters of water. But in addition to the hydroelectric benefits, the giant project also brought unexpected consequences for the movement and balance of the planet.

Scientists explain that such a large mass of water, concentrated in a single point on the Earth's surface, has the ability to influence the distribution of the planet's internal mass.

The result?

A small, but measurable, shift in the axis of rotation and a slight increase – about 0.06 microseconds – in the length of a single day.
