NASA shows the strongest solar flare in recent years

NASA has released images of what it says is the most powerful solar flare in six years, which briefly disrupted some radio communications on Earth.

Thursday's explosion temporarily disrupted radio communications on Earth for several hours, with multiple pilots reporting communication problems.

The agency captured the brightly colored images of the phenomenon known as a coronal mass "explosion" (CME) from its Solar Dynamics Observatory, a spacecraft launched in 2010 that continuously monitors the sun's activity.

"It was an X-class flare with the highest intensity, with the potential to affect radio communications, power grids, navigation signals, etc., putting spacecraft and astronauts at risk," NASA said.
