"Beware of pork...", He complained of a headache, doctors find worm

A man in Florida who suffered from constant migraines was told he had worm eggs in his brain.

The 52-year-old patient sought medical help after his chronic migraines became more frequent and the medication he was using for them no longer worked.

Scans revealed multiple cysts on both sides of his brain that turned out to be pork tapeworm eggs.

The eggs were causing swelling under his skull, which in turn was leading to regular migraines, according to a report written by his doctors that was published in the American Journal of Case Reports.

The eggs are thought to have been the result of eating infected undercooked bacon, as the man told doctors he often ate 'soft bacon', preferring the crispy version.

Microscopic eggs may have entered his intestine, leading to the development of a tapeworm and the laying of eggs that ended up in his feces.

The man's doctors suspect that through 'improper hand washing' these eggs re-entered his body and traveled through his bloodstream to his brain, the report said.

When tapeworm parasites enter the brain, it's called neurocysticercosis (NCC), the report said.

But they said it was very unusual to encounter infected pork in the United States and much more common in rural areas in developing countries where pigs roam freely and eat human feces.

They added: Our case may have public health implications.

Doctors advised patients who see a change in their migraines should undergo further tests to rule out a tapeworm infection.

Attacks tend to occur in 80 percent of NCC patients, and symptoms may begin months or years after infection, often when the cysts begin to die.

The man, who lives in Orlando and had not been out of the country recently, was hospitalized and treated with the corticosteroid dexamethasone four times a day to reduce swelling in his brain, the report said.

He was also given albendazole and praziquantel for two weeks, which are used to treat worm infections.

His cysts disappeared and his migraines improved.

In 2022, doctors in Australia were stunned to find a live worm in the brain of a woman who went to hospital complaining of forgetfulness, depression and stomach aches.
