Bill Gates' big turn: Betrayal or smart change of strategy?
Bill Gates

The Microsoft founder has changed his stance on climate change: his statement has sparked controversy, with some accusing him of trying to please Trump so he wouldn't be targeted, and others seeing it as a clever strategy to sidestep hostility to green policies.

"Climate change is a serious issue, but it will not lead to the extinction of humanity. Therefore, it is time to put human well-being at the center of our strategies."

This is what Bill Gates wrote in a statement, which represents an epochal change and has begun to cause debate, between those who accuse him of trying to please Trump so as not to be attacked, and those who see it as a clever strategy to bypass hostility towards green policies, by bringing back out the window what had been expelled from the door.

We cannot, Gates writes, cut funding for health and development, programs that help people remain resilient in the face of climate change.

“There is an apocalyptic vision that says: within a few decades, catastrophic climate change will destroy civilization. The evidence is all around us: we only need to look at the heat waves and storms caused by rising temperatures. Nothing matters more than limiting temperature increases. Fortunately for all of us, this vision is wrong. Although climate change will have serious consequences, especially for people in the poorest countries, it will not bring the end of humanity. People will be able to live and prosper in most places on Earth for the foreseeable future,” says Gates.

Emissions projections have been lowered, but "apocalyptic prospects are causing much of the climate community to focus too much on short-term goals, diverting resources from the more effective things we need to do to improve life in a warming world."

According to Gates, “ it is not too late to adopt a different vision and adapt our strategies. The global climate summit to be held next month in Brazil is an excellent starting point. Our primary goal must be to prevent suffering, especially for those living in the most difficult conditions. Although climate change will harm the poorest, for the vast majority of them it will not be the only threat, nor the biggest. The most serious problems are poverty and disease. This will allow us to focus our limited resources on interventions that have the greatest impact on the most vulnerable people.”

Gates has no illusions: I know some will call him a hypocrite. But that doesn't stop him from arguing that we should stop using temperatures as a tool to measure risk and damage and focus on quality of life, emphasizing adaptation rather than emissions reduction, which can still be achieved thanks to future technologies. Betrayal or smart change of strategy?
