The mystery of rain on the Sun is finally revealed

Scientists have shed light on a spectacular phenomenon that occurs on the Sun: "coronal rain," a type of precipitation that does not contain water, but superheated plasma, according to "Science Alert."

This rain falls from the solar corona, the outermost layer of the Sun's atmosphere, and slides along magnetic field lines, forming giant arcs in space.

Unlike rain on Earth, these droplets are plasma particles with temperatures of millions of degrees, but they cool enough to become denser and fall back towards the Sun's surface.

The magnetic fields they travel through are so large that they can be five times higher than Earth's.

For years, scientists have been unable to explain how this rain formed so quickly. Previous models calculated that it took hours or days of heating, while telescope observations showed that the phenomenon appeared within a few dozen minutes, especially after strong solar flares.

A team of researchers from the University of Hawaii discovered the missing key: the concentrations of elements in the corona are not stable.

In new simulations where changes in elements such as iron, magnesium and silicon were allowed, the "rain" took only about 35 minutes to form, matching the model with reality.

These changes affect heat loss, causing the tips of the magnetic arc to suddenly cool. As a result, the material rises, cools rapidly, and then falls as plasma "rain."

According to researchers, this process could be a key element in understanding the dynamics of the corona and its energy.

The discovery not only finally explains this curious phenomenon, but forces scientists to reconsider theories about coronal heating, one of the greatest mysteries of solar physics.

The study was published in The Astrophysical Journal and is expected to influence future research on the behavior of the Sun and solar storms that can also affect Earth.
