Employees are wanted... to count penguins in Antarctica

A British penguin protection organisation is looking for people to spend five months in Antarctica to maintain the world's most isolated research and scientific office.

The team will maintain the Port Lockroy base and be responsible for counting penguins, although it will be without running water.

The Uk's Antarctic Heritage Organisation says it usually receives hundreds of applications for the job.

This is the first time the page will be opened to the public since the pandemic.

The organization, which is based in Cambridge, usually requires seasonal employees to Antarctica every year. They are responsible for preserving historic buildings and objects.

Successful applicants will stay on Goutier Island on the Antarctic Peninsula, with each other and a colony of Gentoo penguins for company.

Port Lockroy was the first permanent British base to be established on the Antarctic Peninsula, originally used from 1944 to 1962. However, since 2006, it has been used as a research office and museum.

Candidates are required to have good physical skills, environmental awareness and knowledge of living with minimal impact on the environment.

They will be tasked with running the office, which also serves to welcome tourists, as well as perform penguin counts as part of efforts to protect the Gentoo penguin colony. The team will also take care of the artifacts and museum within Bransfield House.

The country has not had a visitor for more than two years, due to restrictions imposed because of Covid-19, although it usually welcomes about 18,000 people from November to March, a period when it is also the summer season of Antarctica.
