A group of 100 iPhone 4S phone users decided to sue Apple in December 2015 for updating iOS9 that took their devices out of use.
In the lawsuit they asked for $5 ml in reparations because Apple had promised them that the new operating system would make their phones work better and faster, while indeed this system put these phones out of work.
Apple refused to pay $5 mln and instead chose to pay four times more, i.e. $20 mln. That's the figure the company has made available to all users who have had iPhone 4S phones, which after the update has been out of function. According to estimates, each of them will benefit from $15.
To that end, Apple said it would create a section on its official website, where persons who have retribution claims must fill out a form to prove they had an iPhone 4S and that they were damaged by the iOS 9 update.
The lawsuit against Apple was filed by Chaim Lerman and 100 other customers from New York and New Jersey, who accused the company of knowingly out-of-use iPhone 4S after updating iOS 9.
The plaintiffs claimed the company misinterpreted the iOS 9 update as compatible with the iPhone 4S (which came out in 2011) on its website, promising to bring faster performance. Instead the update banned all applications, including the Phone app, and made iPhone 4S devices completely useless.
The plaintiffs said the company intentionally mined the performance of the iPhone 4S so that they had no choice but to buy a new phone.
