Former President Ilir Meta has been detained in cell no. 5 for about 5 months as he is being investigated by SPAK for corruption.

How difficult is it to go from President, Prime Minister, party leader to prisoner in cell No. 5?

Ilir Meta: In the corridors of prisons I have met people with much more values ​​and character than in the “corridors” of politics. I have also understood and felt what Musine Kokalari said, that we must seek freedom within ourselves. And fortunately I feel free. One morning when I entered the table tennis hall I read on the board that it was written: I lir means Freedom. I thanked my mother once again for choosing this name for me.

The former President was asked how he spends his time in the detention cell.

Ilir Meta says that staying in the cell feels like a vacation, mentioning the Kavalishënçen rest home, and that he has learned to cook.

How is your life in isolation? What do you do during the day?

Ilir Meta: My day is fantastic. I feel like I'm in a cavalcade. I read and write all day. I also move and exercise three times a day like never before. For the first time in my life I learned to cook, because I never cooked in the dormitory. I learned extraordinary things that will help me a lot for the future.

I don't consider it time lost, but time gained.

Of course, I have seen how many innocent people are here just so someone can boast about statistics that kill people and their families.

A real reform of the prison and detention system is needed, as over 60% of the people here are either innocent or could be investigated while free, near their families.

The Criminal Code and all criminal policy must be reviewed, as it allows for many abuses in interpretation and destroys people's lives, for which no one is held responsible.
