Astronomers have spotted a near-Earth asteroid that has been very close to our planet for 60 years.
The newly discovered cosmic body, called 2025 PN7, is an asteroid that orbits the Sun but stays close to our planet. Like it, 2025 PN7 takes a year to complete its orbit, writes CNN.
These asteroids differ from the mini-moons that typically orbit Earth, such as 2024 PT5, which orbited the planet for two months during 2024 and may be a broken-off piece of the Moon.
The asteroid was not noticed by astronomers because it is very small and faint. It is located about 384,400 kilometers from Earth.
Astronomers are still trying to figure out its size. A reasonable estimate is about 30 meters long and 62 meters in diameter.
Over time, 2025 PN7 changes its orbit from a circular one to a horseshoe-shaped one, which takes it 297 million kilometers from Earth.
It is expected to remain in this orbit near Earth for about another 60 years before its trajectory changes.
Its composition still remains unknown.
