Teenagers will not be able to use some of Instagram's features without parental permission, according to a new update to the app.

Meta announces that users under 16 will not be able to make 'live' videos without parental approval.

They will also need their permission to disable an option in the messages section, which automatically hides photos that may contain nudity.

The update is an expansion of the Teen Accounts system that Meta is also applying to Facebook and Messenger.

The program was introduced in September to give parents more options to supervise their children's online activity.

Meta said that around 54 million teenagers are categorized in Teen Accounts and the latest changes will first be applied to users in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and Australia.

Other measures that have already come into effect include: switching accounts to private status, blocking messages from strangers, strict limits on sensitive content, screen disconnection notifications, and limited notifications during bedtime.
