Have you ever thought about being in a hotel room and being in two different countries at the same time? It may seem strange, but this is exactly the experience that is experienced at a small hotel in the village of La Cure, located on top of the densely forested Jura mountains that separate France and Switzerland.
The hotel was not originally built for this purpose, but now, thanks to a little-known international treaty from the mid-19th century, the hotel is one of a kind. This unusual arrangement is an unintended consequence of the 1862 Treaty of Dappes, by which France and Switzerland agreed to a small territorial exchange in order to allow full French control of a strategic road nearby.
The treaty stipulated that any buildings along the border would remain in place. The result is that roughly half of the hotel is in France and the other half in Switzerland, with the international border cutting some of the rooms in half. Visible from the window, and only a few meters away, are both border points./CNN
