Liam Payne's tragic death has taken a surprising turn, with his friend Roger Nores and two hotel staff members being cleared of manslaughter. The investigation centres on the events that unfolded in October 2024 when the former One Direction singer fell from a third-floor balcony at the CasaSur Palermo hotel in Argentina.

A court ruled that there was insufficient evidence to hold Nores and the hotel staff liable for the singer’s death. The ruling said that even if they had been present with Payne the entire time, it was unlikely that they would have prevented him from taking the drugs and alcohol that contributed to his state of intoxication at the time of the incident. The court noted, “It cannot be ruled out that, even if he had taken those extreme precautions… [ Payne ] would have managed to take the substances anyway, as is common among addicts.”

After the charges were dismissed, Nores expressed relief in an interview with Rolling Stone, saying, “I’m glad it’s finally over. I’m happy that I’ll now be able to travel to the UK and say goodbye to my friend.” Nores was one of three individuals charged with manslaughter last December, including hotel security chief Gilda Martin and receptionist Esteban Grassi.

Throughout his trip to Argentina, Nores maintained that he did not abandon Payne before the tragic incident. He stressed his devotion to his friend, saying: "I never abandoned Liam; I went to his hotel three times that day and left 40 minutes before this happened."

After the charges were dropped, Nores also filed a defamation lawsuit against Payne's father, Geoff Payne, alleging false statements were made about him during the investigation. Geoff Payne claimed that Nores was responsible for providing drugs to his son, which Nores vehemently denied.
