A tourist who was filmed carving his and his girlfriend's names into the Colosseum in Rome has sparked outrage in Italy.

The Italian Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano, says that the tourist must be identified and punished for the action taken. Sangiuliano described the tourist's action as "unworthy and a sign of great insolence."

"I consider it very serious, unworthy and a sign of great impudence that a tourist destroys one of the most famous places in the world, the Colosseum, to carve his name and his fiancee's. I hope that whoever did this will be identified and sanctioned according to our laws", writes Minister Sangiuliano.

If the tourist is caught, he risks a €15,000 fine and could be jailed, according to Italian news agency ANSA.

Footage has emerged online of the tourist using a series of keys to leave his mark on the building, which is almost 2,000 years old.

With his girlfriend by his side, he writes "Ivan + Hayley 23" before turning and smiling for the camera.
