What's behind the iPhone Maps app logo?
Apple Maps logo

You probably see the icon dozens of times a day – but have you ever really thought about it? The Apple Maps logo has a hidden meaning.

The Apple Maps app logo is globally recognized and indicates a very specific location.

To most people it might just look like a few crossroads.

It's actually the road that runs past the giant Apple Park mall in Cupertino, California. The map isn't completely accurate, but it shows Interstate 280 going yellow, intersecting with N Wolfe Rd.

And in the upper right corner, you can see part of the circular building of the Apple Park Space Shuttle campus.

The old Apple Maps logo instead showed 1 Infinite Loop, which was the longtime hub for Apple.

But in 2017, the logo was changed to celebrate the opening of the new Apple Park campus. Apple has always used different iterations of its campus maps for the Apple Maps icon.

It has changed in small ways over the years, but the meaning has always remained the same. It's now one of the most popular apps on the iPhone, with Apple saying it has hundreds of millions of users in 2020.
