Why do restaurants serve us bread before the dish we ordered?
Although most of us have never thought about the reason for this practice, there is a significant reason why this rule is followed. It is a sign of hospitality. When you welcome people to your home or restaurant, give them bread and let them know they are welcome.
This tradition has survived to this day. It's a way to give diners something to do before their food arrives.
When you sit down at a restaurant table, you're usually hungry, but it can take a while for the food to arrive.
Instead of leaving customers to sit empty-handed, hungry and watch other guests enjoy their food, placing bread on the table in preparation for the arrival of the meal keeps them happy and prevents them from becoming unbearable.
