Nike co-founder Phil Knight topped the list of global charitable donations this year, making the largest publicly recorded donation of 2025.

Together with his wife, Penny, he announced a $2 billion donation to support cancer research. This amount far exceeds any other similar donation for 2025.

The initiative is aimed at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) and aims to strengthen the Knight Cancer Institute, which bears the couple's name. The donation far exceeds the second largest charitable donation recorded for the same year.

The figures were released by the Chronicle of Philanthropy, which this week released its annual list of the largest publicly announced charitable donations.

According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Phil Knight has an estimated net worth of $31.2 billion. He has a long-standing philanthropic relationship with Oregon Health & Science University that dates back at least a decade.

The Knight Cancer Institute was named in honor of Phil and Penny Knight in 2008, after they donated $100 million to the foundation. Since then, the couple has continued to support it with additional multimillion-dollar donations, according to Business Insider.

"The largest charitable donations often come from wealthy donors who have developed long-term relationships with the nonprofits they support. This particular donation fits that model, building on a partnership that has been built consistently and over time," Maria Di Mendo, senior editor of the Chronicle of Philanthropy, told Business Insider.

Also on the list this year was Warren Buffett, who made four major donations, giving a combined total of more than $1.3 billion to the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, the NoVo Foundation and the Sherwood Foundation.

At 95, Buffett remains one of the world's most prominent philanthropists. Despite being one of the richest people in the world, with an estimated net worth of $150 billion, he is widely known for his frugal lifestyle. He still lives in the same Omaha house he bought in the 1950s, eats McDonald's and drives his car every day.

Mike Bezos and Jackie, Jeff Bezos' mother, who passed away in August, are also among the year's biggest donors. The couple donated $500 million to UNICEF USA to support the Children's Nutrition Fund.

In 2022, the couple donated $710.5 million to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle, to support cancer research and care.

It is important to note that the Chronicle of Philanthropy only records publicly announced donations to nonprofits, excluding anonymous or unconfirmed contributions.
