Google's big twist breaks the old rule
Changing your Gmail address is becoming a reality

If you chose an ugly Gmail address years ago, one that was hard to remember, perhaps full of numbers, salvation is fast approaching. In India, Google is allowing Gmail users to correct such a mistake.

In practice, users can attach a second profile to their first Gmail profile, even if it is completely different in name. The first Gmail address continues to function normally. It receives messages and attachments as before, without interruption. But the same messages and attachments start arriving in the second profile linked to the first.

Access to services

Not only that. Both the old and new profiles will allow access to Google's main services: such as Maps, YouTube, Google Play or Drive. As is the case in such cases, Google is introducing the innovation gradually, initially to a limited number of users, before expanding it to everyone. However, there are some limitations.

A new profile can be created and linked to the old one only once a year. Moreover, the user can only do this operation three times in total, then no more. And the new profile cannot be deleted, if we regret the choice. If we decide to delete the old profile to use only the new one, the old one will not be made available to other people who want to register it.

Despite some limitations, the innovation remains revolutionary because it overturns one of the pillars of Google's strategy, which was based on the uniqueness, immutability and irreplaceability of our Gmail profile. Although bombarded by calls and messages from journalists from all over the world, Google has not specified when this innovation will be introduced in the United States and especially in Europe./ La Repubblica
