There is no method of execution that is not painful, but one man in the 16th century faced what is known by many as "the most brutal death penalty" in history.

If you're familiar with history, then you know that people of the past were very imaginative when it came to torture devices: Like the infamous bronze bull that slowly roasted its victim or the "Spanish donkey" that slowly cut the unfortunate in half, or simply rotted for a long time in a forgotten dungeon - all these were terrible fates, writes Unilad.

What happened to Richard Roose probably trumps everything else. In 1531 Roose was cook to Bishop John Fisher of Rochester and was accused of poisoning his guests. He was suspected of adding a suspicious powder to the porridge consumed by the guests, among them two beggars who were at the dinner.

After the guests became seriously ill and the beggars died, Roose fled. However, he was soon captured and taken to the Tower of London, where he was tortured to reveal his motives. During questioning, Roose claimed he added the powder to the food as a joke, not knowing it was poisonous and deadly.

Despite his claims, King Henry VIII, the ruler at the time, was not merciful. He passed a law declaring poisoning an act of treason.

According to the law of the time, traitors were usually dragged through the streets, hanged, quartered and then split in half.

Roose's punishment was even more brutal. On February 28, 1531, with no concrete evidence but the king's word, Roose was sentenced to death.

At his execution, before a large crowd in London, he was plunged three times into a cauldron of boiling water until he died.

It is not surprising that many people were horrified by the cruel death. People called the execution "the most brutal ever", while others simply concluded that "we humans are the most cruel creature living on Earth".
