The big question of which came first, the chicken or the egg has been a classic dilemma for decades.

Experts, however, seem to already have an answer to the age-old question, although it is not as definitive as we would like.

The Daily Express writes that long before they were a favorite breakfast food, eggs evolved from vertebrates known as amniotes, which later evolved to lay eggs where they lived on dry land.

Eggs are thought to have been first used as human food by the ancient Egyptians and Romans. They used eggs in their cakes and breads, likely as a binding ingredient.

The first hard-shelled eggs existed long before chickens, experts believe. Dr. Ellen Mather, a paleontologist from Flinders University who specializes in ancient birds, told the Daily Mail: "If you frame the question in terms of eggs as a whole, then the answer is definitely eggs."

The earliest fossil record of eggs originates more than 300 million years ago. Humans have been consuming eggs for about 6 million years. Chickens, on the other hand, have only been around for a few thousand years while eggs have been around since the time of the dinosaurs.

"The first eggs laid on land came much later, during the Carboniferous between 358 and 298 million years ago. They were released by early reptiles," says Dr. Mather.

The origin of the eggs is more likely to be the product of modern reptiles, including snakes, which, according to Dr. Mathers, emerged during the early Jurassic period.

These ancient eggs likely resembled what lizard and bird eggs look like today. The time difference between the egg and the chicken stands at about 100 million years ahead in favor of the egg.

"The first true chickens hatched from eggs laid by partially domesticated red junglefowl. Depending on how you interpret the question, both answers can be correct. If the question is only about chicken eggs, then the answer would be chicken," says Dr. Mathers.
